Familiarize yourself with the app. There are several types of data that can be collected using the MODi accelerometer. These will be listed below the image of the accelerometer in the app. You can scroll through the list to see the data options. Identify the location of the accelerometer data for the device. This is listed as three separate values labeled as “Accel X,” “Accel Y,” and “Accel Z.”
Note: While observing data, it is important not to bump the surface your accelerometer is resting on. You will notice the data fluctuates. Record your best estimate of the value to the tenths place.
Orient yourself to the MODi accelerometer. The MODi accelerometer is a short cylinder, similar in shape to a hockey puck. For the purposes of this activity, we will consider the circular face with the Mantis logo printed on it to be the “front” of the device. You will observe data collected by the MODi accelerometer as you change its orientation in order to learn how the sensors correspond to specific directions.
Tap the “Start” button in the app. Observe the real-time data from the accelerometer as it is recorded. Focus on the three cells labeled “Accel X,” “Accel Y,” and “Accel Z”. Change the orientation of the MODi accelerometer as described below and record the data in the table provided.
Based on your observations and knowledge of gravitational acceleration, identify the following characteristics on the diagram shown here: x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis positive and negative directions for each
